‘Galaxy’ is a Material Design fork of Yalp Store for those who want to ditch Google Play

For those unfamiliar with the Yalp Store, it's an open source third-party app store that mainly scrapes the Google Play Store for downloads, while avoiding the use of any Google Play Services. It can allow you to install Play Store apps on your phone without needing to log into a Google account on your phone. As a byproduct of how Yalp works, it's also made downloading the likes of Nvidia Shield games on any device possible while remaining entirely legal. While the Yalp Store is a great app, it lacks a pretty interface because the developer wants it to run on any device from Android 2.x up meaning that it cannot implement Material Design. That's where "Galaxy" by XDA Senior Member WryOrean comes in—it's a fork of Sergey Yeriomin's Yalp Store which aims to bring a Material Design interface to the app.

Note that the Yalp Store and all of its forks are in a grey area in terms of how they are viewed by Google and that there is always a risk of your account being terminated when using third party software to access Google's APIs.

We haven't heard of that ever happening yet, though, so there's no need to panic until it actually starts to happen.

Galaxy follows Material Design guidelines and as a result, better resembles the Google Play Store.

For those who want to avoid the Google Play Store, you can find Galaxy on XDA Labs or on our Android Apps & Games forums below. It's really only useful in a scenario where you've de-Googleified your device, either with the likes of MicroG or flashing certain custom ROMs like this LineageOS fork.

The Yalp Store provides its own credentials to download apps with, but you can choose to use your own Google account if you desire. Regardless, it will automatically update your apps just like the Google Play Store and it even provides file sizes, download counts, and app ratings.

HMD Global Still Hasn’t Released Kernel Sources or Enabled Bootloader Unlocking on any Nokia-branded Phones

Here at XDA we rely on device makers abiding by the General Public License v2 (GPLv2), the license which governs the Linux kernel on which the underlying kernel on Android devices is based on. This license entitles the public the right to see any modifications of the source material (in this case, the Linux kernel), and requires Android device makers to publish the kernel source code that matches the binaries of any shipped devices. However, many device makers fail to abide by the GPLv2. A recent example is Xiaomi, which last week finally released kernel sources for the Xiaomi Mi A1, 4 months after the phone's launch, and only after XDA and other outlets called them out for it.

Now, it appears that another company is running afoul of their obligations to meet the requirements under the GPLv2. HMD Global, the company that licenses out the Nokia branding for its license of smartphones, has yet to either provide any kernel sources for their devices. Furthermore, the company still hasn't provided a bootloader unlock method for any of its devices even after initially promising they would allow for unlocking devices "one at a time".

This statement was several months ago, and since then, there hasn't been any official word. At the same time, the company also claimed that they were "respectful" for both the legal and the "moral obligations" of GPL, and that kernel source release was already a "work in progress".

Yet, there is still no sight of kernel sources. HMD Global's delays are not only a violation of the license agreement (which can be actionable in a court of law), but they work against the interests of the developer community and violate the spirit of open source development. XDA and the broader Android developer community urge HMD Global and Nokia to release the kernel sources for all Nokia devices, as they are obligated to do so.

New Commits in the Chromium Gerrit Show Material Design 2’s New Colors

Material Design, the unified design language that launched alongside Android Lollipop, features flat, pastel color palettes, depth, soft lighting, and realistic physics. It's meant to mimic the tactility of real-world objects without resorting to skeuomorphism; Google describes it as a synthesis of "classic principles" with "[the] innovation and possibility" of technology.

Since Material Design's debut in 2014, it's spread across the Android ecosystem like wildfire — not to mention Google apps such as YouTube, Chrome, Gmail, Hangouts, and Google Calendar. Floating action buttons, pleasant colors, and elevation techniques have been made available as part of the Material Components Library on GitHub (the follow-up to Android's Design Support Library and Google's web-focused Material Design Lite), which brings Material's goodness to Android in the form of custom views, and to the web in the form of bundles that can be imported and used like standard HTML tags.

Now, on the eve of Material Design's fourth anniversary, Google appears to be prepping the next generation of its paper-and-ink-inspired aesthetic: Material Design 2. Precious little information is publicly available about Material Design 2, the existence of which was uncovered this week in new commits in the Chromium Gerrit, and we make no claims that it's a proper successor to the newest Material Design framework. But the commits point to noticeable, if subtle, changes in color palettes, iconography, and touchscreen behavior.


Material Design 2 in Chromium

In early February, new commits on the Chromium Gerrit implemented "Material Design 2" UI in Chrome's tabstrip — the draggable tabs containing webpage titles, favicons, and the "close tab" button above Chrome's address bar.

The commits aren't drastic, but make changes to the appearance of Chrome's tabs. They increase the height of the tabstrip; make unspecified tweaks to tabs' content layout, specifically to titles and alert indicators; and decrease tab touch width while increasing tab standard width. They explicitly don't modify tab alert indicator colors, tab separator colors, the "new tab" button, or any tab typography.

Revealingly, the commits merge make reference to a "Material Design 2" tab close button icon and "basic color constraints required for Google Material Design 2".

Digging deeper into the commit code shows new "Material Design 2" color palettes for grey, red, and red-dark Chromium themes, and new colors for the standard Chrome toolbar and incognito toolbar. We used a hexadecimal lookup table to generate the RGB swatches:

Material Design 2's red is slightly darker than the current Material Design's Red 800 (#C62828) and Red 600 (#E53935), while the new shades of grey (#3C4043, #5F6368, #BDC1C6, #F1F3F4) have a lighter, bluish tint. Material design features traditional greys, where R=G=B, while here, B>G>R at every shade (but only by 1-4 / 255).

Material Design 2-compliant versions Chrome will also feature a much brighter toolbar than current builds — it's nearly white compared to the current greyish color scheme.

Finally, the commit adds a new IsTouchOptimizedMaterial() flag to the MaterialDesignController, which might refer to touch-optimized Material Design 2 elements. We wrote in early January about Google's effort to improve the Chrome web browser's touchscreen support on Chrome OS devices, and it appears to be a continuation of it.


The Important of Color in Material Design

So what do the new colors mean in the broader context of Material Design?

Material Design is more than just about layers, components, and elements, and how they behave in relation to one another. Central to Google's design motif are high-contrast themes, bright colors, and bold highlights — they're what make Material Design-compliant apps stand out from the crowd.

Google provides sample color palettes designed to "work well together" across platforms, and encourages developers who take advantage to source a primary app color — otherwise known as a "dominant" color — from a collection of 500 different swatches. (Think "blue", "green", or "purple", and other basic colors.) If needed, they source a secondary color from an expanded collection of 700 colors (complementary colors for the most important UI elements, and analogous for less important UI elements, and a tertiary color from a subset of 300).

Color plays an important part in Material Design hierarchy. Bright colors suggest importance — they're reserved for prominent buttons and other interactive elements. Subtler colors, on the other hand, add visual interest by accenting text fields, progress bars, links, and other parts of the UI.

From what we know about Material Design 2's color palette, at least a few of the swatches in Google's "primary 500", like Red 600 and 800, are darker than their Material Design predecessors. But others, like grey, get the opposite treatment — both the grey and white swatches shown in the Chrome tab mockup have a colder greyscale and higher blue values.


Right now, that's all we really know about Material Design 2. But the commits might be a sign that something's happening behind the scenes, and if that's true, we might learn more sooner than later. Google's expected to take the wraps off Android P, the next major version of Android, as soon as March, and Google I/O 2018 kicks off May 8. Both are prime opportunities to take the wraps off Material Design 2.

Leaked Samsung Galaxy S8/S8+ and Note8 Android Oreo build brings February Security Patches

New leaked versions of Samsung's Android Oreo update for the Galaxy S8, Galaxy S8+, and Note8 have been posted online. This version of Oreo contains this month's February security patch. We cannot say what has been patched in this month's security update as neither Samsung nor Google have posted their security update bulletins for February yet.

Regardless, you might want to get on these security updates as soon as you can. It feels like every month a new major vulnerability is uncovered. BlueBorne, KRACK, and Spectre/Meltdown have all been unveiled in the past 5 months, so we wouldn't be surprised if the February patch fixes some critical vulnerability that hasn't yet been disclosed.

Fortunately, these builds are able to be installed from the stock Samsung recovery, and they are 100% safe to install. You can install it by first flashing version BQL1 with the latest Odin tool on the Samsung Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8+, and flashing version BRA8 on the Samsung Galaxy Note8.

To do this, you download the files from the links below and place them in their respective categories in Odin based on the file names, and then boot into recovery and apply the update over ADB or from your SD Card. This will erase the data on your phone so if you update, make sure to back up first. You can use either Samsung Cloud on your phone or Samsung Smart Switch on your computer. Here are some step-by-step instructions:

  1. First, download and put the update.zip file, linked below, onto your SD Card.
  2. On your computer download the Odin files linked above. In the zip you will see six files. In Odin, you will see 5 categories, though you will only use 3.
  3. Put your phone into Odin mode by turning it off then holding Power + Volume Down + Bixby button.
  4. In Odin, put the corresponding BL, AP, CP, CSC (ignore HOME_CSC), but nothing in UMS.
  5. Hit start.
  6. Your phone will flash the new firmware and then reboot to the setup screen.
  7. After you do this, shut off your phone then reboot into recovery by holding Power + Volume Up + Bixby.
  8. Use the volume buttons and power to select "apply update from SD card."
  9. Use the volume buttons again to select the update.zip file and the power button to select it. The update will then start.
  10. It can take from 2 to 10 minutes to install the update. After this just set up your phone like normal.

Customize the Google Pixel 2’s Active Edge to do any action with Edge Sense Plus [XDA Spotlight]

It's no secret that Google and HTC have been working together on the Pixel 2. The two companies recently finalized a massive deal which saw the transfer of core HTC engineers over to Google, after all. With how tightly Google controls the design and development of the Pixel smartphones, it's sometimes difficult to see where Google's partner OEM might have had an influence. That isn't true of the Pixel 2's Active Edge feature, which is clearly influenced by HTC's Edge Sense. A major difference between Google and HTC's implementation is that HTC's is far more customizable. Now, however, the Pixel 2's Active Edge customization possibilities are limitless thanks to Edge Sense Plus.

Edge Sense Plus is an application by XDA Recognized Developer j to the 4n, initially developed for devices with HTC's Edge Sense (hence the name), that has recently been updated to support the Google Pixel 2 and Pixel 2 XL. The app not only allows you to perform custom actions on a single squeeze of the Pixel 2, but it also opens up the ability to perform actions on a double or long squeeze of the device.

As you can see in the screenshots above showing the app's configuration settings, you can set an action on a single, long, and double squeeze of your device. These actions can also be customized based on the device's physical orientation, or disabled entirely when the phone is in your pocket (in case you prefer a higher sensitivity and accidentally squeeze your phone when grabbing it out of your pocket.)

The app is chock-full of features, although the double squeeze and orientation detection require purchasing the premium version of the app, and the developer lets you choose how much you want to spend to unlock the premium version (either 1.49€, 2,49€, 3,99€ and 5,49€ will fully unlock the app). Given how much it offers, it's not a lot to ask for. To make it even more enticing, the developer announced today that he has added Tasker integration to his app, which means you can do literally anything you want with a squeeze of your Pixel 2.

For those of you who haven't heard of Tasker, it's the most popular automation app on the Google Play Store. It consists of "Profiles" and "Tasks" which can be lumped together into a "Project." A Profile is made up of one or more conditions (called "Contexts" in Tasker) that, when met, launches a Task, which is a set of user-defined actions. For example, if you make a Profile with the "Wi-Fi Connected" Context that triggers when connected to your home SSID, you can launch a Task that changes your default wallpaper.

Edge Sense Plus vs Button Mapper

Some of you may have heard of Button Mapper by XDA Recognized Developer flar2. We've covered it on the Portal in the past. You may have seen our previous article that went over how to remap the Active Edge on the Google Pixel 2 using Button Mapper. So what's the difference Button Mapper works without needing root access. Edge Sense Plus requires root access. But that doesn't mean that Edge Sense Plus is inferior. In fact, it's quite the opposite, and here's why.

Active Edge is hard-coded to only allow for squeezing to launch the Google Assistant, dismiss alarms, or silence incoming calls when the phone isn't in immersive mode, in the Google Camera app, or in the middle of a phone call. Because of these restrictions, Button Mapper has to use a workaround in order to remap the squeeze function. It implements a service that reads the system logs on your device while filtering for something called the "ElmyraService" (a code-name for Active Edge). Once it finds this line, Button Mapper performs an action of your choice. As you might expect, this can have a toll on device performance, and many users have reported as such.

Edge Sense Plus won't cause any performance issues, because this app requires you to install a Magisk Module that replaces the stock SystemUI APK on your phone with a modified one that intercepts the ElmyraService to send all events to Edge Sense Plus. In essence, the stock Active Edge functionality is actually remapped whereas the non-root Button Mapper solution just gives a guise of doing so. Obviously, the trade-off is that Edge Sense Plus needs root access for this, which means fewer users might be willing to install it.


How to Install Edge Sense Plus on the Google Pixel 2 and Pixel 2 XL

Now that you know all that there is to know about remapping your Pixel 2's Active Edge feature, why not give it a shot? The first thing you'll need to do is actually install the app from the Play Store. It is free to install, though as mentioned before, the double squeeze and motion sensor features require an in-app purchase. Furthermore, if you want Tasker integration, you'll have to install Tasker which only offers a 7 day free trial (it's one of those apps that is totally worth its price, though).

YouTube Go Now Available in Over 130 Countries Worldwide

In September 2016, Google released a preview of YouTube Go in India, a lightweight version of the YouTube app designed for users in developing markets. Since then, the company brought the app to 14 additional countries, including Indonesia, Nigeria and Thailand, and this week announced that YouTube Go is available in over 130 countries around the globe.

"We've been working hard to build a YouTube app that works for you, with brand new features designed with your preferences, aspirations and needs in mind," Jy Akkad, YouTube's product manager, wrote in a blog post. "We can't wait to see what you can do with the power of YouTube in the palm of your hand."

YouTube Go is the culmination of Google's efforts to improve the mobile YouTube experience in markets where data is expensive or not widely available. That app works offline, without a connection, and gives users control over mobile data consumption on a per-video basis. The key features include a trending videos hub, video previews, and the option to download any video instead of streaming it.

This week, Google added more features to YouTube Go. The app now allows you to download, stream, and share videos in High Quality, which hadn't been possible until now. (The High Quality option is available in addition to basic and standard quality resolutions.)

In addition, you can access new personalized content by swiping down on the app's homescreen, and the app now notifies you when new videos are uploaded to channels you're following. The sharing capabilities have been improved, as well — Google says it's made it easier to access the "Share Nearby" feature, which lets you send videos to YouTube users via Bluetooth and Wi-Fi Direct. And multiple videos can now be shared at once.

Google recently launched a whole bunch of "Go"-branded apps, including Google Go, Files Go, and more. It's part of the company's Android Go initiative — we've written about how Android Go helps older phones run Android 8.1 Oreo, and the Android Go phones that are coming soon.

How the Kirin 970 Uses AI to Take Better Photos

The AI is able to do a much more accurate job of detecting the background and the edges of the person being photographed. Notice how one the iPhone X, the flowers between the faces of the people are left unblurred, throwing off the entire effect. On the View 10, the camera is better at detecting all three faces and removing them from the background, blurring all of the appropriate areas.

Intelligent Scene Recognition

Right now, the Honor View 10 can recognize 13 different scenes with more being added. The View 10's dual camera setup consists of two sensors, a 16MP sensor and a 20MP sensor, the former of which has a f/1.8 aperture and phase detection autofocus and support for video recording up to 4K. It uses the NPU to its fullest — all of the camera modes from previous Honor phones make an appearance in the View 10, along with some new ones made possible by the Kirin 970's NPU (shown below). The NPU means you'll spend less time adjusting your camera settings and makes it easier to take perfect shots.
